Middle & High School Christian Formation

Each Week both Middle and High School students gather in the Worship Space for opening welcome and prayer. Following this, Middle School students (6th & 7th) go to their designated areas for their sessions. 8th-12th graders remain in the Worship Space. All groups re-gather at the conclusion of sessions for announcements and closing prayer. There is a specific “Pick Up Protocol," so please review the instructions and follow accordingly.  Thank you!

Celebrate Youth Masses are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month of the school year, during the regularly scheduled 11:15am Mass, and is generally followed by a Family Potluck held at 12:30pm. This is an “official class," hosted by individual grades, and students are expected to attend!

Middle School Youth Group (grades 6-7) Our Middle School students use the Pflaum Gospel Weekly, Vision, which offers a lectionary-based approach to learning about our faith, as the basis for their classroom breakouts. Additional seasonal information/activities may be included or replace specific weeks, depending on appropriate timing.

High School Youth Group (grades 8-12) The High School program follows a 4-year cycle using the 4 pillars of the Catechism: Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Discipleship (Prayer is woven into all 4 years and is not a separate yearly theme). Our theme for the 2021-2022 year is “Sacraments." Students meet in large group sessions with informal small group breakouts. Our 11th/12th grade students spend time in more in-depth conversation on the theme for the year and other topics of interest. Additional seasonal information/activities may be included or replace specific weeks, depending on appropriate timing. For 10th graders preparing for Confirmation participation in HS Youth Group is a requirement.

There is an optional meal plan for those interested in participating in the meal offered each week during the 30 minutes prior to regular formation sessions. There is a one-time $25 fee or a recommended $3 fee per meal for students interested in participating in this social time. Please be sure to check the box on the registration form if your child is interested in participating in the meal option each week.

VIRTUS

VIRTUS® is a national Catholic training program for the prevention of the abuse of minors.  The Diocese of Richmond requires that all adult volunteers who work with minors must complete a background check and take the 3 hour VIRTUS training course. Please see www.virtus.org for more information or to register.

Youth Confirmation Preparation & Celebration

The Diocese of Richmond has established policies regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation for adolescents who have already received the Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist.

  • In order for an adolescent to begin preparing for Confirmation, he or she must be currently enrolled in the 10th grade and at least 15 years of age.  Reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation will occur in the spring of the year in which the candidate has completed the preparation.

At St. Ann, 10th graders preparing for Confirmation are expected to attend High School Youth group, a kickoff day-long retreat, a weekend retreat, and a final retreat (scheduled after celebrating the Sacrament) geared specifically toward Confirmation preparation. These events are vital formation and preparation programs for receiving the Sacrament. Participation in all three retreat experiences is required. Advance notice of any conflicts will enable alternative arrangements to be made for make-up retreats/sessions.
