THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FR. LOU’S REFLECTION

“Crimes must bear a price”

Though I didn’t understand it fully at the time,

              I did watch intensely

the newscast of the trial of Adolf Eichmann,

the chief of the Gestapo’s Office of Jewish Affairs---

the bureaucrat who oversaw the Holocaust.

He was captured in Argentina in 1961,

                            and flown to face charges

                            of “Crimes against Humanity.”

His trial took four months as he invoked,

                                  time after time,

that what he did, he “was ordered to do.”

Similarly, Slobodan Milosevic,

            former Yugoslavia president,

was arrested in 2001 and put on trial in 2002

for war crimes against ethnic Albanians in 1999.

Milosevic died in 2006 before a verdict was finalized.

And who could forget the images of Saddam Hussein

        after his capture

        from a hole

in the ground where he was hiding.

He was put on trial for “Atrocities against humanity”

for which he paid with his life.

We live in an age where leaders of countries

are not only scrutinized but held accountable

                           to world opinion---and even court.

And so,

within ten days of each other,

two culprits of crime,

                        crimes of hurt and terror

                         met their accountability:

for one,

the World Court indicted Sudan president, Omar al-Bashir

with “crimes against humanity and genocide” in Darfur,

estimated at killing hundreds of thousands

which began in 2003 and continues to this day.

Secondly,

Radovan Karadzic,

the Bosnian and Serb president, 1992-1995,

was arrested on war crimes charges,

massacring nearly 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

       Like Saddam Hussein,

Karadzic, when arrested, had a white beard,

                                designed to deflect his identity,

                                 but unlike Saddam,

                                 he appeared openly---

                                 almost like a Santa Clause,

                                                    a Serbian Orthodox priest,

                                                        but in fact a doctor.

Crimes from the ordinary

Crimes from the mighty

make no difference on those who are hurt.

The voices from the grave cry,

             “Alleluia, justice reaps its reward!”
