THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

FR. LOU’S REFLECTION

“To maintain life is ‘pro-life’”

Last April, and again this February,

my health brought me to the hospital.

         My stays were not that long;

short enough for me to get well

                         and back on the job.

                        Other than these two episodes,

it was 37 years from my last hospital stay.

Hospitals have changed since those years.

                         The insurance business has changed,

                                becoming the real ‘powerbroker.”

                                Procedures and medicines have

                                   also changed---and so have costs,

which sends patients on their way,

                                   many times before they’re ready.

Way back in 1962 when President John Kennedy

         first brought Medicare to congress,

         it was the powerful AMA

             who spoke against “socialized medicine”,

                     and vowed to defeat it.

It was under President Lyndon Johnson

in 1964-65 that Medicare was approved.

The AMA is hardly in the equation now

                            in this nation’s healthcare debate,

                            and the skyrocketing costs.

The cost of healthcare is prohibitive

to tens of millions of our citizens.

And the cost of a medical emergency

                                            can bankrupt---and does---

                                                   a family, many families,

                                                   even middleclass families.

Now, I’ve been quite fortunate

that I’ve always had medical insurance:

          with my parents,

          as a factory laborer,

          even my college days.

As a priest my healthcare is taken care of:

                you help pay for it.

I pray my ministry gives justification.

But many are not as privileged as me.

As a society

we need to be willing to offer medical coverage

       to as many as possible.

Our healthcare system needs to be rooted

in the values that respect human dignity and

              protects human life.

It is one of those “pro-life” issues

that doesn’t seem to meet the litmus test.

And so people who are living will die

                            because the greatest nation

                            on earth

                            cannot guarantee

                            equal access to medical help.

It is simply a moral issue.

LITURGICAL NEWS & HAPPENINGS

The third Lenten Soup Supper and Rev. Ronald Rolheiser video series will be held  Wednesday, March 10th, at 6:00pm. Mary Ellen Winkler will be the presenter and leader of discussion following the video.

Lenten Reconciliation Services will be held at St. Ann’s this Thursday, March 11th at 3:00pm & 7:00pm. We bring our sins and sorrows to the Lord, asking for renewal and forgiveness. The pain of these burdens make us feel as though we have pebbles in our shoes, or even as though we are weighted down with rocks and boulders.   Please bring one of those rocks or boulders to the service, as a symbol of your sins and hurtfulness to others. Place it at the foot of the cross after reconciliation and experience  forgiveness and a lighter heart for having given up your burden to the Lord.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS ON SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 2010

The Second Scrutiny of the RCIA Candidates will be on Sunday, March 14th at the 8:30am Liturgy.

EASTER FLOWERS - Donation envelopes are available in the commons.  If you would like to honor a loved one, or the memory of a loved one, pick up an envelope and return it in the collection basket or deliver it to the Parish Office.  We will honor our family and friends by printing their names in the Holy Week Worship Aid.  Please return the envelopes by March 24 to be printed in the Worship Aid.  Envelopes returned after this date will be given recognition in the weekly bulletins following Easter.  Money not used for Easter flowers will enable us to beautify the worship space throughout the year.  Thank you.
